“I love to ‘hide’ things in my work, or include the unexpected, whether it is tennis balls as lemons in my Wimbldon tree or secret messages and symbols. This painting is from a series called ‘Surprises’, which has characters hidden in the trunks of trees. This one represents fertility, with colourful ripe pomegranates and the ‘Graces’ celebrating their form, just waiting to capture their mates with a satin ribbon. This guy was re-wrapping his turban before the ceremony started and it was a really simple moment, but also wrapped up in its own mini ceremony.
