"Penmaen Bend, 2013" by Emma Cownie

“Penmaen is in the Gower Peninsula, near Swansea. This painting is a ‘peeking out’ view from a car, slipping out of a parking area which serves as a place to park and then walk down a rubbly, sole stabbing, twisting lane, to either the bays, Three Cliffs or Tor. I seek to paint the ‘experience’ of light on colour and form - I am interested in how light invigorates, resonates, generates or dare I say it animates colour and form, rather than simply dressing or caressing it. The light is thus generated in this painting, almost coming from within not from without. This effect is underscored by my use of drawing lines around colours and form, as with the fauvists. I want colour to be the product of being generated, animated by light as if light was the genesis of colour.”

"Ziggy Stardust, 2013" by Jem Gooding

“As a long time admirer of Bowie's work and unique style, through this portrait I wanted to capture the flamboyant vibrancy of David Bowie's alter ego 'Ziggy Stardust'. Using vivid colours and a striking pose, this is a tribute to the man of Glam Rock and individual style.”

"Fading Flower" by Leon Sarantos

“Fading Flower portrays a woman contemplating a flower. The theme is the fading of youth, both in the flower and the figure of a lady. Her challenge and ours is to seek new inspirations from past dreams and experiences. This is an abstract painting done loosely, with the interplay of the reds as one element, the highlighted areas of the woman's body and flower counterbalancing each other, and the purple providing the backdrop. The painting is part of a series in which I combine realism with elements of abstract patterns.”

"A Murder of Crows" by Newel Hunter

“This painting came out of me in an uncontrollable burst of energy that married red and black in a fluttering, undeniably crow-like flight. It became A Murder of Crows in that spontaneous instant. It was one of those moments -- and I've had many -- where my hand acted on its own, guided by a force that was simply beyond me. I can't get enough of those.”

"Acrylic on paper #71, 2013" by Frederic Belaubre

“Immediacy of gesture and of the result, organization of space, lines, colours, values - everything must appear in a few seconds, using the technique developed little by little over the years. No turning back is possible, the freshness of emotion comes first and foremost.”

"Oddy-knocky, 2013" by Alessio Radice

“Oddy-knocky was painted at the beginning of 2013. I tried to convey a sense of defeated innocence in the eyes of my subject but the portrait of this young man is open to interpretations; only the eye of the spectator can solve the enigma behind his candid eyes. The portrait was painted in oils on high quality panel; like all my paintings I used both brushes and palette knives. Brushes to have more control, palette knives to convey complexity and raw emotions.”

"Happy New Year!" by Emerald Dunne

“While I was living near Kyoto in Japan, I went to many matsuris (summer festivals). Summers there are hot and humid and most women wear yukatas, light cotton kimonos, equally colourful as the traditional ones but easier to wear. I bought one myself and wore it to my exhibition later that year. Matsuris have crowds, food, music, drums and fireworks - everyone really lets their hair down! I created this painting one particular January 1st and conjured up a little piece of summer to see in the new year, using gold leaf, vibrant colours and Japanese chiyogami paper to capture the mood once again.”

"'The Curve', 2013" by Simon Kirk

“In my work I combine painting, collage and decollage (cutting or sanding away the built up surface to reveal layers below). I am fascinated by the combination of text and image in art, and in ‘Puzzled’ the free association of the figure with the cut-up text creates a playful, humorous work with an ambiguous narrative. The text is cut from pages of novels. In my variation of the cut up technique I cut the ‘poem’ I create out in one section. This is distinct from the cut up technique of cutting out strips of words and re-arranging them randomly.”

"Petrol Station, 2013" by Cate Inglis

“On a recent trip to the remote Scottish town of Tighnabruich I happened upon this forlorn little petrol station standing alone at the edge of Loch Fyne. The building was once the Old Pierhouse and I loved the way it still has a continuing purpose in this isolated place. The subject is a wonderful balance of solidity and decay, of loneliness and purpose - a story of endurance so fitting for the landscape it occupies.”

"Black And Proud" by Denise Laurent

“I like this cheeky pose, this is my boy Harry in his slimmer days. I thought I’d call it ‘Black and Proud’ because black cats are so often overlooked in rescue centres. It seems so unfair that they find it so hard to get good homes! Black cats are beautiful; truly they are the domestic panther in our homes. Anyone who lives with a black cat will find themselves blessed both by their beauty and their wonderful personalities. Harry himself was rescued from the snow one winter and we have never regretted inviting him into our lives.”
