About Simon Shepherd

  • Biography
Simon Shepherd is a London born artist, now based in Brighton. Simon's sculptures explore the distinctions between the familiar and the unfamiliar by combining different, relatable objects and creating or illustrating new meanings from this amalgamation.
Simon's work looks for and develops the beauty and aesthetic of the everyday object and invites the viewer to reassess their expectations and preconceptions of it. A piece of work will often start with a familiar object which the artist finds to have some inherent beauty. He will then work to develop this, sometimes in a playful way, exploring the potential he sees within. An object may juxtapose with unfamiliar surroundings, creating incongruity which challenges the viewer to reconsider its aesthetic value.
Shepherd has featured in numerous solo and group shows both in the UK andinternationally. He has won awards, most notably the ‘Cork Street Open’ award in 2011. His work has been featured in publications such as Aesthetica and Juxtapose.
