Walking for inspiration along the South west coast path of Cornwall

I am on holiday staying at Lamorna on the South west coast of Cornwall. Boxing Day has been perfect for a winter walk, taking in the pale sun through the silvery grey sky over the beautiful colours of the sea and vegetation.

Using my filbert brush in a watercolour demonstration

I’m using one of my favourite brushes called the Filbert made of hogs hair and creating by pressing the paint on for the tree impressions in the forest on wet on wet background. I love this way of developing my watercolours.

    The amazing Jurassic coast, Dorset

I’ve climbed the Chesil bank to see the wild sea in between the storms and are very inspired by the sunset, moody clouds and colours of the sea. One of my favourite places to be.

Sunset colours in a watercolour demonstration

I’m using a Chinese hake and applying the sunset shades on wet paper and randomly placing the colours over the yellow washes wet on wet technique. Then I move the paper tipping the pigments and I love that bit.

Quantocks and view to Exmoor and the moody sunset

I’m high up in the Quantock hills highest peak Wills neck look across at the sunset sky through the dramatic clouds. Its breathtaking views, beautiful moorland and woodland beneath. I walked from the bottom called Triscombe and feel very uplifted to reach the top. A place where it’s quieter than Exmoor not so known. I’m totally inspired by the landscape and connecting with it is truly special. I found patches of heather still growing, gorse, bracken and different types of moss - lichen. Can’t wait to come back here for more hill walks and seeing the colours in Spring next year.

    Defining the baseline

I’ve nearly completed this watercolour art demonstration. Using my observation of the sun, shadows, reflections and energy. I have been to many lakes, ponds and the coast and through my imagination and visual memory I created this original watercolour on my kitchen table. Showing step by step art demonstrations using wet on wet techniques, etching out the paint with my nail for the grasses plus the reflective light in the water to the baseline using layers of dark paint. I have been teaching and demonstrating for over 15 years.

    Wardour woods plein air watercolour

    Wardour woods plein air watercolour

It was wonderful to paint by the edge of Wardour castle in Wiltshire sitting on the stone and immersing myself with the beauty around me. I created an atmospheric watercolour of the view of the woodland beyond and had to wait for the rain to clear before I began to paint.
