    STUDIO April 2017

On the easel is TRANQUILLITY XVI completed, on the wall behind the easel are two originals from the LIBERTY series and also hanging on the wall is the latest rowing boat waiting for the under-painting to dry before more layers of paint can be applied. On and against my plan chest are two of my limited edition canvases of LIBERTY paintings and there's also a TRANQUILLITY limited edition canvas.

TRANQUILLITY XVIII is on the easel, going well and just a couple of days away from being finished. On the wall are three of the LIBERTY paintings and ETERNITY I. Leaning against the plan chest is a canvas limited edition of the first in this series of LIBERTY paintings. This was the image that achieved an 'Artist of the Year' title and the 'Masterpiece Award' at the American Art Awards in 2015.

TRANQUILLITY XII on the easel, much of the canvas finished but some sections still showing the under painting.

    TRANQUILLITY XVI on the easel

Three days painting, having started at the top and that's how far I've got. So another twelve or so to go. My technique is slow and labourious involving lots of careful and subtle blending of colour.

    NEW SEASCAPE

    NEW SEASCAPE

The first day painting on this 30 x 60 inch canvas is largely taken up with the underpainting and establishing the design through blocks of colour. A few weeks will pass by while the oil paint dries before more layers of paint are added.

Here's a shot from the studio. On the easel is the nearly life-sized LIBERTY IV with the under-painting just completed. On the wall behind is TRANQUILLITY X. To the right is a commissioned piece and next to that is LIBERTY III, this original has just been published as a super limited edition gallery wrapped canvas with a finished size just a little smaller than the original. Leaning against the plan chest is a 32 inch square canvas edition of LIBERTY I, this one is also gallery wrapped (the image continues around the outside edges - no need to frame and looks great in this contemporary style on a plain wall). This is the painting that won 'The Masterpiece Award' in the American Art Awards in 2015, this same painting had previously won an 'Artist of the Year' title here in the UK.

    THE BOAT THAT I ROW

    THE BOAT THAT I ROW

Day 2 - The under-painting stage, for those interested in my painting methods this stage is really about covering all of the white oil ground on the canvas with something like the right colour. Literally an undercoat. Now there is a sense of the overall colour balance and play of light. Get that wrong and there may be little sense of 3D later. Only opaque colours that will dry fairly quickly are used at the under-painting stage and the painting will be left to dry for a few weeks before any more paint can be applied. This is a very traditional method of oil painting where subsequent colours, mostly with some degree of transparency, are built up to produce depth and detail. Light will pass through the additional layers and bounce back from the opaque colours underneath adding an extra dimension to the paint that is only achievable by using professional quality oil paint. The canvas is of a fine grain and a super quality tightly woven oil primed linen over a hardwood stretcher.

    THE BOAT THAT I ROW

    THE BOAT THAT I ROW

Another development from my water paintings series and another favourite subject. I might just call this one Lulu for short - you might need to be of a certain age to know the connection. First day of the painting - just drawn out. Boats and me go back a long time and this particular boat was one that I knew for many years. Built by the boat builders Dixons of Exmouth, Devon in the late 1950s and was one of the boats for hire at Ladram Bay up until the mid 1970s, it's changed hands a few times since and is sadly no longer around. I have actually spent many hours rowing this boat and painted it a number of times before. It is featured in several Francis Frith photos and I'm in one of those photographs too (ref. L3091), as a boy and in another boat! Some will know the sort of Victorian photographs that Francis Frith is well known for, however just for the record the 19th century photographer's descendants did continue to photograph and record life for many decades into the 20th century!
