    BEGINNING THE UNDER-PAINTING, LIBERTY IX

Leaving the traditional/historical imagery behind for a while to concentrate on my more contemporary paintings. Here I'm just laying a base coat down on this 43 x 67 inch linen canvas and this will need to dry before I can build up further layers. In the meantime I'll be starting on another koi painting.

LAUNCHING THE SIDMOUTH LIFE BOAT, 1872

LAUNCHING THE SIDMOUTH LIFE BOAT, 1872

The finished painting, the Sidmouth life boat 'Rimington' was launched on 5th September 1872 to rescue the crew of the Guernsey brig Frederick William. The crew of 8 were saved. This painting will be included in my solo exhibition 'SEE THE SEA' in September. It is for sale although it will not be available until after the exhibition.

    SIDMOUTH LIFE BOAT LAUNCH

    SIDMOUTH LIFE BOAT LAUNCH

One of my more traditional paintings on the easel and nearing completion in preparation for my next 'SEE THE SEA' exhibition in Sidmouth in September. The life boat was launched when a Guernsey brig was seen in distress. The event is recorded but wasn't without event, the life boat capsized and was re-launched eventually rescuing the crew of the brig.

A FISH SALE ON SIDMOUTH BEACH

A FISH SALE ON SIDMOUTH BEACH

A more traditional painting in preparation for my forthcoming exhibition in Sidmouth in September. With the exception of the sky and cliffs everything is still at the under-painting stage - so quite a few more weeks with that small brush!

    KOI ANTICIPATION VI update

    KOI ANTICIPATION VI update

Here's an update on the latest Koi painting. The under-painting is now complete and it's clear how the painting will progress from this stage. Lots of detail, sometimes scale by scale and all painted with a small brush. However before that can be undertaken the under-painting paint has to dry and some quite slow drying colours have been used so it's going to be quite a few weeks before anymore paint can be applied. Too much haste and subsequent layers of paint could crackle if they were to dry quicker than the paint underneath.

    HEAVY HORSES

    HEAVY HORSES

Trees are in, horses are pretty much complete now and I've just begun the under-painting of the snow. The foreground will have quite a lot more painting.

    KOI ANTICIPATION VI

    KOI ANTICIPATION VI

Having an opportunity now to produce some stock/gallery paintings following a period of commissioned work here's the next in the KOI ANTICIPATION Series. This painting has already absorbed a few hours of studio time with the careful and considered placing of the fish now complete. Canvas size 36 x 36 inches, a very fine linen canvas and plenty more to do!

EARLY STAGES OF A BOAT PAINTING

EARLY STAGES OF A BOAT PAINTING

Here drawn out onto a 28 x 43 inch canvas is one of my rowing boat paintings. Next decision to make will be the colour of the boat, will it be varnished wood or white?

    HEAVY HORSES

    HEAVY HORSES

Heavy horses are another favourite subject and I do enjoy painting nostalgic equestrian scenes. I built up quite a catalogue of this genre in the 1990s with many licensed and published in various forms. This 24 x 40 inch canvas has the under-painting stage completed. Next to go in will be some distant trees on the right and then some indication of snow on the ground as this painting will probably become a Christmas card.
