{Press update} Interview with the Artist: Hsin Lin - Bloom Like Flowers. Published February 2022 Maroondah City Council's blog.

Hello to my new friends & old friends. Welcome back to my 3rd blog post of February 2022! I am pleased to be invited to the interview and be featured on the Maroondah City Council's blog. Special thanks to Amy Freund, Editorial and Publications Officer. It was a pleasure working with you really. Quote from original post- Interview with the Artist: Hsin Lin - Bloom Like Flowers Published 08 February 2022 Federation Estate Gallery’s latest exhibition is by local artist Hsin Lin, and explores the beauty of flowers and our connection to them. We interviewed artist Hsin Lin to learn more about her inspiration behind the exhibition, the mediums she uses and favourite flowers. Q: What was the inspiration behind the exhibition? Bloom Like Flowers is a contemporary floral series that I have been developing for years. Bloom like Flowers embraces the diversity and salutes the strength of life by featuring Australian native flowers we love and common flowers we know. It is also a series that I painted to raise awareness of mental health. It encourages people to be nurtured into deeper mindfulness and to cherish the beauty of nature in their local environment. Q: What is your favourite piece in the exhibition? One of my favourite pieces would be the largest piece from my signature series - Bloom Like Flowers, A Life Time Story ‒ Orchids and Roses on Wood Tray with A Weaving Basket (2021). It is also an artwork that took me the longest period of time to complete. Every object in this artwork stands for a different meaning. You may see this work as a documentary of the time that we all went through. When I look into the details in this particular piece, I remember every moment that I spent painting it, sunny days and rainy days. Q: What do you hope viewers get out of your exhibition? I paint flowers to show my happiness and wish to bring positive energy to my viewer. Flowers are celebrations of life. You can see the collection as a reminder that as the flowers are in full bloom, this is our time to be alive. Q: How do you feel your fashion background influences your painting style / technique? To me, there’s one thing in common regarding being an artist and being a fashion designer—that is to appreciate the material that you use, and to explore the possibility of it. Just like designing a garment—you have to think through how the fabrics are attached, how your design will be composed as a whole and give it a new life. As an artist, I sometimes stand in front of the canvas meditating for a long time before my paintbrushes touches it, just to imitate how the flower grows and extends in my mind, following the natural order. Q: What mediums do you like to use? I find acrylic is the perfect medium to interpret my intense passion for the subjects I depict. I love the vivid and opaque property of paint on canvas. In my ongoing contemporary floral series, I use close observation to try to capture as much detail as possible. I do paint with oil and watercolour sometimes to let loose, but acrylic is always my go-to medium. Q: How long does it take you to create a piece of artwork? Artworks from my main series have very intricate compositions and I used a photorealistic approach, with each tiny petal built up by more than eight layers of paint. For large-scale pieces, it takes six to nine months from start to finish. Q: What is it about flowers that you love so much? I see flowers as salutes to the strength of life. Just like every one of us is unique, each flower has a different appearance and different flowering seasons. Each flower looks different, smells different, has its own spiritual meanings. Most important of all, the flower always blooms in its own time without competing with other flowers. That’s the beauty of it and I am absolutely obsessed with the natural order. I believed everything falls into the right places at the right time. Q: What is your favourite flower? My new favourite would be the Australian native flower ‒ Eucalyptus Macrocarpa. I love it so much, that I often visit Royal Botanic Garden just to admire its beauty. The original artwork ‒ A Lifetime Grit ‒ Eucalyptus Macrocarpa (2021) in the exhibition is the 3rd depiction I have done of a gorgeous flowering gum tree in Cranbourne Garden. The former two have found good homes soon after they launched. I especially love the details on the large, ovate grey leaves and the earthy tones of the plant. The rough surface of the gum nuts and the smooth silky texture on the flowers display of greatest strength of life. Eucalyptus flowers also have the symbolic meaning of healing and protection. Seeing a gum tree makes me feel grounded wherever I am and I see it as an anchor. Flowers don’t have to be fragile to be beautiful, they can be strong and tough. To me, Eucalyptus Macrocarpa is the tough kind of beauty. Bloom Like flowers is showing at Maroondah Federation Estate’s Gallery until Friday 8 April. Hope you guys enjoy the exhibition & happy collecting! Warm Regards, Artist, HSIN LIN

Below is the full Speech by Artist HSIN LIN on the opening event- “First of all, Thank you, Mayor, Cr Mike Symon, Deputy Mayor, Cr Rob Steane, Maroondah City Council, Arts in Maroondah, and Maroondah Federation Estate Gallery for having me. It’s a great honor. I would also like to say a big thank you to the Curatorial Program Officer, this solo is professionally curated by Gareth Syvret the Curatorial Program Lead, and Andrew Duong. Thank you for everything and thank you for making it happen. Tonight I see some familiar faces. I would like to say hi to new friends, old friends, collectors, friends, and families. Thank you very much for making it to the opening. Words cannot describe how happy I am to see every single one of you, especially after two years of the pandemic. I want you to know that you are important, your love and support make everything possible. Following I would like to give you a short insight into the series- Bloom like Flowers. Bloom like Flowers is a signature series of mine that I’ve been developing for years. Those artworks from the main series have proceeded in intricate composition and photorealism approach, each tiny petal was built up by more than 8 layers of paint. For large-scale pieces, it takes 6 months to 9 months from start to finish. In this series, I don’t care how much time it takes, but I am willing to give it as much as the time it needs to be achieved. Many of you might know I wasn’t an artist my entire life, but I have never dropped my paintbrushes since the day I started. At first, I paint flowers to empower myself, when time goes by, I realized my artwork empowers my collectors, my viewers, and I think that’s the most amazing thing in the world. The best thing I love about flowers is each flower has a different appearance and different flowering seasons. They look different, smell different, have different spiritual meanings. Most important of all, the flower always blooms in its own time without competing with other flowers. Just like every one of us is unique, regardless of our gender, nationalities, and all the differences that you can think of. If we can embrace diversity and all the differences, the world is a better place. You can see it as a reminder that as the flowers are in full bloom, this is our time to be alive. I would also like to conclude my speech with a line from my favourite poem - “Let life be beautiful like summer flowers -By the poet Rabindranath Tagore. To every one of you who visited the exhibition or watching the video right now- Let’s make our life be beautiful like summer flowers. May you too bloom in the best season. Last but not least, all the original artworks in the solo exhibition are ready for new homes. Please feel free to let me or the gallery know if you are interested in any particular ones. Thank you very much and I hope you enjoy the exhibition. “ Solo Exhibition info: Bloom Like Flowers: Hsin Lin Categories: Arts, Council, Exhibitions ➡️ Maroondah Federation Estate Gallery 32 Greenwood Avenue, Ringwood ➡️ View the exhibition: 7 February - 8 April Mon - Fri, 9am - 5pm Hsin Lin’s new exhibition and series Bloom Like Flowers explores the process of blooming and our connection to nature. The flowers symbolized happiness and gratefulness for the life you have been given. They are a celebration of life. The Egyptian believed that the gerbera would lessen the sorrows and stresses of everyday life in the old days. It also has a meaning of closeness to nature and devotion to the sun. Alstroemeria is a symbol of wealth, fortune and prosperity. Symbolic of powerful Yang energy, Chrysanthemums are believed to represent longevity, joy and attractant of good luck in the home. If you receive chrysanthemums from someone, it is a symbol of love. The beautiful sun-coloured yellow rose can also convey warmth, delight and affection, as well as say good luck, welcome back, and remember me. A Lovely surprised in my mail box this morning! Much appreciated VAS for featuring my story on Victorian Artists Society Members' Magazine for December 2021- our second magazine of 2021.

Season’s greeting to everyone! Early Merry Christmas to all my new friends & old friends. Welcome back to my 2nd blog post of December 2021! ❤️ (And the last one of 2021? Maybe? 😊) Featured Artwork in the Magazine: A Life Time Story - Orchids and Roses on Wood Tray With A Weaving Basket -2021- Acrylic on Canvas, Ready to hang. Quote from original article – Hsin Lin As an artist who is obsessed with the beauty and the form of flowers, I paint every object as a self-projection. During the new Era, time slows down for every individual to focus further on the connection to mother nature and the surrounding around us. I started a special series called ‘The Lockdown Diary’ since the pandemic- a special isolation diary that I wrote with my paintbrushes. It is an extension of my ongoing Contemporary floral series, featuring native flowers we love and common flowers we know. To experience the changing of the seasons and to present moments in the new normal, it has become a routine of mine to paint the first bloom in my surrounding during its flowering season. Most of my inspiration comes from my observation of the natural world. I use close observation to try to capture as much detail as possible. Through my paintings I see flowers as representing life, each different flower and object have their significant meaning and symbolism. Flowers represent us as humans, Vases as the body carrying our soul and physical body, protecting us as a shield in a natural order. In one of my large-scale pieces, which was completed during the lockdown, the weaving basket stands for connections- the bounding between families, friends, all the people around us. Even if we are apart, everyone is still being linked together as a whole, stronger together. Every passenger in our life, every stranger who is meant to cross our path for a reason, plays an irreplaceable role in this life-time story. You may see the work as a documentary of the special time that we came through. Our body kept us strong, alive, and healed, the heroes who keep the world moving. It is also a reminder that as the flowers are in full bloom, this is our time to be alive. Flowers always bloom in their own time without competing with other flowers. May we all bloom in our best season. Original artwork is now available on my profile if you are interested in this particular artwork. Hope you enjoy & Happy collecting ! 21 Dec 2021

Featured Artwork info- A LIFE TIME LOVE – Chrysanthemums, Roses and Green Ball Dianthus (2020) Artist Acrylic on canvas. Artwork painted extend to all Side panels as photo shown. Ready to hang, D rings and wire attached at the back in gallery standard. 61 (W) x 91cm (H) x 3.5 cm (D) By HSIN LIN I present you a latest piece in my award-winning/signature series -Bloom like flowers. Affirmation: A life time may be short, but it may also be long enough for us to make it the greatest journey. When the world turns upside down, cherish the people who love you, most important of all, remember to give yourself a life time love. This project is actually planned for quite sometimes. I started this artwork around March, since then, a lot of things happened and the world seems changed completely. On the other hand, we have more time to be with ourselves, to think and to realise what is really important to us. This artwork somehow kept me grounded all this time and I happy to say I finally have it completed at the end of September. It’s been a really long journey, sunny days and rainy days. Long working hours required determination and faith to achieved. I spent almost every day studying those intricate composition and fine details. If you look close enough, each tiny petal was built up by more than 10 layers. The process wasn’t an easy task but It’s a challenge that I enjoyed, and I am proud of myself for not giving up. There’s also another reason that I’ve never mentioned why I started this series in the first place. Which I did revealed during an artist interview on August 2020. Years ago, I was ill. The mother nature, my paint brushes and canvases were the things that helped me back to my feet. Since then, I have decided - if I have the time/ life that I thought I nearly lost, I want to make good use of it to create something beautiful, to do something only I can do and to pass the positive messages and healing power to people, that intension never changed. Life goes on and I think we all agree that 2020 is a very different year. By the time I have this artwork completed, I decided to name this artwork - A Life Time Love, which is also an extension from my previous artwork – A Life Time Journey, A Life time blessing, and Have Faith in A Sunny Place. Because the world might change in all of a sudden, but love keep us grounded. This is also a reminder to myself- always take care and love yourself first, that’s what makes you stronger. I sincerely hope you enjoy this artwork from my signature series - A LIFE TIME LOVE. Spiritual meaning of the flowers- Dianthus - flower of the Gods. Green Ball Dianthus, also known as Green Trick Dianthus are a unique flower with a fuzzy ball-shaped bloom. The name comes from the Greek words “dios," meaning heavenly and “anthos," meaning flower. Dianthus is one of the oldest cultivated flower varieties. Greeks and Romans used the flowers for decor, and garlands. Till now, Dianthus is still very popular and often used in floral arrangement. Chrysanthemums symbolize deep passion and optimism. Red roses stand for true love and romance The flower of bird of paradise symbolize joyfulness and faithfulness. Leucadendron, native to Australia, are often used to convey an appreciation for simplicity in life. Simple beauty is one of the most popular meanings for this bloom. This artwork is inspired by an amazing floral arrangement that I spotted in Donvale, Melbourne, Victoria, 2020 – A unforgettable year.
