When I drew, I was completely immersed in that day spent on a tiny island with a soundtrack of the measured creaking of ropes, the cries of seagulls, and the chime of bells that penetrated every cell of the body. It was neither cold nor hot— the sun was gently warming through the milky clouds, creating a soft diffused light. It was as if that clock on San Giorgio Maggiore had been designed and staged for me.
