An expressive oil painting created in 2000. The image was an exploration into German Expressionist painting observing the mark-making and bold brush-marks used by Frank Auerbach (one of my favourite painters and inspiration). Through looking at and gaining an understanding of his mark-making processes, following his methodology in painting and scraping off and re-painting the image over and over, until I reached a point I felt the painting was complete. This lead to a series of works including one that combined Frank Auerbach with Willem De Kooning in my painting 'Carly'.
