The first blast of a North-westerly gale rolls in over Start Island, Sanday in Orkney. The lighthouse was designed and built by Robert Stevenson in 1806 and is Scotland's only vertically striped lighthouse. The light was automated in 1963 and since then the island has remained uninhabited...it is two miles from my studio where this painting was made.
