Original artwork description:

This small collection of 5 works is inspired by walks around Kendal in the South Lakes area of Cumbria - the Lake District.

Painting mainly rural landscape scenes where the impact of man is virtually hidden I was challenged by an architect friend to try some urban scenes. I felt my reluctance was justified when studies and photographs from a particular day in Kendal was wrestled with in the studio to frustrating ends. My usual energetic, impasto style would not lend itself to architectural scenes. Not willing to let it go however, I returned to previous experiments with collage from undergraduate days and this led to more interesting results – which I played with, building up layers and mixing with acrylic until the first mixed media piece emerged. Finished off with flurries of oil paint… as with the other pieces - which are also inspired from real views and places.

The Yards of Kendal particularly interest me and I am keen to extend the series – eventually taking in other local market towns of Cumbria. I may also at some point experiment with major city scenes from travels across the world.

Signed by me on the front and labelled on the reverse - these mixed-media works are complete with a beautiful, bold and chunky, handmade and hand-painted deep, scooped dark frame that really shows off the colours (the charcoal blue of the frame does look slightly more blue in these shots but indoor to the naked eye it tends to show up more as a dark blue-grey)
