After the summer heatwave and drought of 2022, we (myself and my wife) managed to choose the wettest and stormiest week of the year to visit the coast in Cornwall.
One advantage was the excellent waves which surged and crashed onto the beaches and the rocks. Extremely visual and I did many sketches and reference pics too.
Plus by shutting my eyes, I can still feel the salt laden air and hear the crunching of large rollers smashing into the cliffs.

This was one of two painted pleinair at Molunan beach, on the Roseland peninsula, which is practically our second home.
I wanted (and want) to capture some of that dynamic energy in this painting which is why I tried to keep the brushwork very loose.
The trick is to walk the line between representation and energy of one's brush strokes.
Also sometimes keep the accidental, after all that's how emotion gets into the picture.
