Berneray is a tiny island situated in The Sound of Harris. It is connected to the islands to the south (North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist) by a short causeway. A ferry service runs from Berneray to Harris and Lewis to the north. In this painting you can see part of a traditional white- washed stonehouse with a thatched roof. there is no specified drying area, just a line rigged up where the washing can dance around in the ever present sea breeze. The composition is continued on the edges to allow hanging without framing if so desired.
