The fascinating waggle dance by one of the worker bees is believed to show the rest of the bees where to find the best pollen or where there is danger.
My "Waggle Dance" is a sort of collage made for Friends of the Earth Great British Bee Count. I have designed and used laser cut clear acrylic bees that I then gild with metal leaf and fill in the engraved areas with ink. The hive is made using a sheet of plywood which is then gilded in a gold coloured metal leaf with the outline of the cells drawn in ink. The "hive" is then treated with a special varnish which stops the metal leaf from tarnishing. The box frame has an acrylic face which also keeps the effects of sunlight from damaging the metal leaf.
As you can see from the photos as the light changes the metal leaf also changes at times quite dramatically!
metal leaf, acylic, plywood, ink, varnish
