THE STORY

This artwork is a celebration of love, of oneness. It started with these twin irises I accidentally found, and sketched while on a trek in Kashmir. The idea of the vintage diary page with a specific date symbolizes the harsh limitation and bondage of time which affects all relationships, while one's intense hope, and longing to let the oneness be eternal, remains.

In this artwork, the 'joint-ness' of the flowers which I found in the valley made me philosophise and think of the romantic idyll of oneness, and I began looking for a poem to express my thoughts. Miraculously I found one by Amrita Pritam that did just that -- and I used it in this artwork. I have also played around with the handwriting by continuing the idea of 'joint-ness' or oneness.

THE PROCESS

This is essentially a mixed media artwork, with several layers of polyester plate lithography, one layer of offset platography and some serigraphy to complete it. Polyester plate lithography is a relatively recent non-toxic medium in fineart lithography. The drawing is made directly on the plate, just like for stone lithography, and the ink is rolled on with alternating layers of water in between, and then hand-pulled from an etching press.
