Artist's description:

There weren't many homeless people about when I was growing up. At least not many that I saw, but in the town where I went to school there was one old man, always dressed in tattered rags, who slept rough, and, it was rumoured, chose to live that way. He had rather a grand name, that I cannot quite remember, but we always referred to him as 'the tramp' and he was often to be found sheltering under a bridge. He was perfectly harmless of course but seemed a little sinister and scary at the time. I hadn't thought about him in years, but while painting this one, something about the light and the colours around the bit that looks like a bridge, totally reminded me of him.
