This painting explores a frame from the movie The Road (Starring Viggo Mortensen). The image explores the scene that grabbed my attention at that moment and I wanted to capture this in an oil painting. The image is one of a few images I painted at the time between January - July 2013, exploring particular moments or turning points in the movie, becoming part of a series exploring significant shifts in the story's direction.
The other movies explored at the time include: The Impossible and Full Metal Jacket amongst others; investigating those moments in time that leads to a shift/ change in a pathway leading to a conscious awakening with the character and subsequently the viewer of the moment in the movie.
I was drawn to specific scenes linked to moments of change - the subdued colours hark back to the idea that we seem to become more aware of information in an image through a lack of colour which can distract the mind from the information contained in the image.
Through layering oil paint and deconstructing the image, i explore the composition, the scene, the ideas, the point of view from the director/ cinematographer and retranslated into a painting, investigating reaction to the scene through painterly means of expression.
