Artist's description:

The green man has been a figure of folklore probably as long as mankind has existed and represents the union between mankind and the plant kingdom. Also known as 'Jack in the Green', 'John Barleycorn' and many other names. All around the UK and many parts of the world there are 'green man' carvings and images hidden in church and cathedral interiors and porches, a nod to the so called 'pagan' beliefs that dominated before the advent of Christianity.
This painting is loosely done with oil pastels and watercolours on watercolour paper and is ready to mount and frame in your own choice of surround.
"I am the face in the leaves,
I am the laughter in the forest,
I am the king in the wood"
From a poem about the Green Man by Mike Harding.
