During my millennium project I read of the Great Tall ships race in 1872 between Cutty Sark and Thermopylae. This inspired me to paint the race two weeks out of Shanghai with Thermopylae eight miles in the Lead as they sailed passed the light at Anjer. Cutty Sark was much faster in open sea and was well ahead by the time the reached Capetown. At this point
Cutty Sark broke her anchor which held her at standstill for 13 days allowing Thermopylae to arrive in London 6 days ahead.
This painting took considerable research I was lucky to obtain the Log of the Cutty Sark and some original pictures of this fascinating clipper ships. The canvas has been repaired after returning from an exhibition.
