Summer Roses is part of a new direction in painting for me, using old favourites and new media together: after rummaging in my cupboards I found some tins of Hammerite paint, a hard-wearing, long-lasting, oil-based outdoor-use paint and started experimenting!
I love to outline images and using this strong black paint really gives some punch to a subject matter that is inherently viewed as soft and girlie. The lack of control and energy that come from working in this way is exciting though it's not for the faint hearted and I make many irreversible mistakes. However I am learning not to get hung-up on details and relearning the ability to paint with abandon - just as I did as a child.
