The barns of Maine are magnificent! They make you realize the priorities of earlier times. The barns were always much larger than the houses. The barns were vital to a farmers livelihood. They had to protect the livestock from the harsh winter and hold the hay to feed them. They were often connected to the houses to protect the farmer on the way to the barn. Life must have been very harsh here.
Now though, many of the barns are falling into disrepair. Some, like this one, have been repaired and are still in some kind of use. Not for cows, in this case at least.
this was painted en plein aire on a summer afternoon.
It is painted o a cradled panel, and the edges are painted grey. There is a wire on the back, so it is ready to hang in your home!
