Original artwork description:

For those unacquainted with diverse Indian art genres some may sound like oddly named items of furniture in a well known Swedish Flatpack furniture store - Phad, Gond, Warli, Tanjore - while other styles bring to mind dishes you would order from an Indian takeaway menu - Madhubani, Kalamkari, Pattachitra, Kaligat. Broadly speaking the 10 main categories of Indian art take their particular characteristics from the specific regions of India in which they originated, and mirror the diverse ethnic idiosyncrasies of that region - mythology, folk traditions etc. Strangely there appears to be no great tradition of Still Life painting in India - ie, the painting of boring, everyday objects, usually arranged haphazardly on a table. Still Life - from the Dutch 'stilleven' - spans the centuries from Egytian tombs to the present day and was extremely popular in the Netherlands in the 17th century. With the help of new friends from Calcutta I hope to invigorate this IndoDutch art form.
