The image of a smiling soldier smiling at the viewer, as part of relief and a sense of calm, considering the experiences he has had whilst on tours of duty in Iraq, when coalition forces went into Afghanistan and then Iraq.

The painting seeks to highlight some of the effects these conflicts have upon the soldiers taking part in these tours, whilst bringing a human element to the situation and the effect policies have in response to events that lead to these situations, in seeking stability in the world.

In the tradition of oil painting aking to those like Delacroix, this painting, as well as others, seek to capture a sense of the time and era of the early 21st Century and ways in which people are affected by these forms of the human condition.
