This painting is a layered painting, working in oils and damar varnish solutions. It is painted on 0.5mm ply board, thinner and thicker layers of paint are used and the ground or board is allowed to remain in places. Unframed and retaining the rough edges of the original board surface commenting on the spontaneous elements of the work. The painting has a wooden frame in the back to stabilise it, the work can be hung directly from this or framed by the buyer.
My work is not about the male gaze or men projecting their own fears and fantasies onto the female form. This is not about the representation of a body, an empty vessel.
This is an exploration of me as a woman, or women, from our standpoint. It is an exploration of me as an artist. The images are not here to be titillating or to shock. All of the work in the 'Broken Down' series is a playful experimenting, with images, with materials but mainly with ideas, dreams, fantasies and reality.
Which is fantasy and which is reality is for you to decide.
