Original artwork description:

"Saint Nicolas and Virgin Mary with Jesus on the Cross" is a Romanian traditional icons on acrylic glass/plexiglass, painted in reverse side technique, with hand painted wooden frame.
Theme inspired by the New Testament depicts the Virgin Mary dressed in black cloak, bending over the cross that Jesus is crucified on. With hands folded in prayer our Lady watches in tiers at the cross. She's shown with no aura. Saint Nicholas stands besides Her. Jesus is pictured at a much smaller scale than the other two. The scene is dramatic.
Background is decorated with a garland of flowers, oversized and with with and red stars. Colors: black, white, red, green, blue, gold.

TECHNIQUE: oil&acrylic colors with gold leaf on Guttagliss Hobbyglas - a high quality glass made from hard polystyrene. The resistance to breakage is about 10 times higher than the actual glass of the same thickness.
Wooden frame is painted in acrylics and protected with special gloss varnish for wood; is provided with hanger so it is ready to be put on the wall.

If you want this icon at another size or if you want a painting with another saint or another scene, do not hesitate to contact me. I will make for you a recommendation and a price offer.

Painting icons on glass is a traditional Romanian activity. Folk icons on glass are painted on the reverse side of the glass. First, the outlines are drawn with black inkr. Then each area is filled with tempera or oil colors. This has been a Romanian folk tradition since the 18th century. In our villages, the knowledge is passed from generation to generation, from parents to children. Many artists remain anonymous. These icons are primitive, colorful, glamorous - and very modern as a plastic conception.
A „definition” of the glass icon says that it has to be done according to a model (izvod). It usually has no anatomical proportions, but balanced chromatic patterns . The models currently used are 200-300 years old.
The writing is Cyrillic. There are several elements of a typical icon on glass: it represents a character or more, the remaining space is filled with flowers borders, rope borders, or stars borders.

Materials used:

Guttagliss Hobbyglas/acrylic glass/plexiglass, wood, oil colors, acrylics, golden leaf
