Regresus (Latin "regress") is the second painting of a trilogy referring to the process of individuation that is the becoming one's Self. The image is a metaphor (inspired by a dream) of the process of getting back and down to the deep subconscious realms where one could confront their past and their basic instincts and unknown parts of the personality.
The general idea of the trilogy is that a person needs to pass through a regressive stage in order to realize some basic principles that would later help them progress again.
The other two stages (referred to in the other two paintings) are: 2. Constitutio (Latin "constitution") and 3. Progressus (Latin "progress").
