Original artwork description:

In appreciation of the wisdom carried by indigenous people, I occasionally paint honor portraits of medicine people who have directly or indirectly influenced my path. In this painting, I depict the late Lakota ceremonialist John Fire Lame Deer (1903-1976) against a background of grazing bison. While painting the bisons or buffalos, I was inspired to depict the calf as a white buffalo calf. Accounts of his later life can be found in Lame Deer, Seeker of Visions compiled by Richard Erdoes.
