A line of Lombardy poplars, but with an interruption - two trees felled with the implication that more would follow. As a child I watched with horror as a line of beautiful poplars were cut down in case their roots interfered with a new housing development. Later on I came across Gerard Manley Hopkins poem - "Binsey Poplars" about a similar loss. This etching is an attempt to describe both the beauty and the vulnerability of these trees. The displaced birds form a sharp which resembles the lost trees.
