This bit of surreal art photography is a fun paradox of scale with a familiar pairing of cookies and milk. Giant Oreos rain down in this twist on classic pinup and pop art. A curvaceous figure kneels flirtatiously on an enormous cookie, resting on an equally large hand. She raises a cool glass of milk in one hand and with the other, an appropriately scaled Oreo to her lips. The falling cookies repeat a decorative pattern.

Rather than cheerful light, the palette of cool purples and deep browns strikes a reserved mood. Even the warm tones of the body are diminished into blue-gray shadow. The frosty-white milk stands out against the dark background. Only one cookie, the one under her knees, is turned to expose the filling; a shadowy gray contrasts with the sparkling white we might remember.

The composition occupies a depth of a few inches, or a few feet, depending on which scale you wish to interpret. The iconic brand is instantly recognizable and connects viewers through their collective consciousnesses. The sharply focused foreground of milk, body, and cookies gives way to fuzzier elements just behind them.

The artwork recalls the painting of Mel Ramos, who humorously paired pinup girls with oversized chocolate bars, Chiquita bananas, and Coca-Cola bottles. The iconic brands are instantly recognizable and connect viewers through their collective consciousnesses.

In the realm of surreal art photography, the influences of my formative years include pre-Photoshop practitioners, Philippe Halsman (think SalvadorDali airborn with cats) and Jerry Uelsmann. But the enduring influence is Sandy Skoglund. Other pinup and pop art influences for this piece include painters Olivia De Berardinis and Mel Ramos.

This artwork is not endorsed by or affiliated with Mondelēz International, or it’s subsidiary Nestlé, the maker of Oreo cookies.
