This piece has been made using handmade gouache paints and dyes (Cochineal and Mexican Marigold) to build layers of colour and the composition. In this painting Stephenson is exploring the universal experience of passing of time and the inevitable flow of life and death. Inspired by his surroundings of Oaxaca, Mexico, which is steeped with history and as areas are excavated many relics and ruins from ancient Mesoamerican cultures have been discovered . In particular, Stephenson is looking at the process of accretion and building layers over time, both in the literal sense of his painting process with palimpsests and layers of paint as well as figuratively with the depiction of layered earth and fossilised or buried forms
