Space and freedom

It is a cloudy day on Ameland and it looks like it will rain every now and then. Fortunately, I can paint wonderfully on the beach and when the sun shines faintly through the clouds, the seascape becomes a colourful scene. Gorgeous.

With smooth touches of paint, I captured the atmosphere on the canvas. It has become a beautifully colourful whole, a painting you can walk right into. I apply a very layered style these days: sometimes as many as 15 layers of paint, making the composition more lively and interesting. After years of viewing, you still discover new elements in the artwork. An asset for your living room or office.


Beach represents space and freedom. I often demonstrate space in my paintings by laying the horizon low. For me, this is an essential part of a seascape. Sometimes a row of dunes can be seen to the side and most of the time the beach is empty.
