Original artwork description:

Part of my new exhibition 'Music compositions' at the 'Foyer' of the Danish Art Workshops, Copenhagen.

In these complex wall sculptures, various wood pieces coexist with numerous overlapping strings, creating ‘abstract’ 3D paintings/reliefs that refer to musical instruments and musical symbols. I have created musical instruments and sound sculptures in the past, which are kinetic or interactive. However, this time I try to represent sound and musicality only visually, in works that are static, not interactive, and silent, but can still reveal all the dynamics and tensions present in music. Different types of strings have been used (steel, brass, etc.) which refer to various musical instruments, but now acting as visual ‘line’ elements, that Koutsouris uses to ‘paint’ on his 'wooden canvas’.

I'm really proud of these works, as I have put a lot of thought and effort into their design and making. They are priced much higher than many of my other works, because they have been made with solid hardwood which is an expensive material and requires a long processing time and advanced tools. I have spent numerous hours also designing the construction in such a way that it remains fairly light, but super sturdy to support the forces from the strings with ease. I even created my own hand-made plywood to obtain the thin and strong 'solid wood' shapes in the relief.
To ensure longevity, the strings are stretched just enough to be straight, since the purpose of these sculptures is not to function as real musical instruments, but as visual art pieces.

Materials: Solid wood and handmade plywood from oak, walnut, mahogany and ash, rustproof music strings and wire, stainless steel components. Coated with a fine hardwax oil, which gives a superior surface to the touch and enhances the grain of the natural wood.

Weight: app. 14 Kg. Easy to hang from two screws on the wall. Metal fixings are installed at the back for mounting flush with the wall.

PLEASE NOTE: A wooden crate has to be assembled for this work, therefore allow about 2 weeks for the work to be shipped.

I would be happy to answer any of your questions!
All the best,
George
