Seraglio is the lovely Italian word for a harem. Another of my Orientalist paintings which is kind of an homage to the Victorian-era Orientalist paintings of their favourite subject, the harem. Of course they were complete fantasies of their febrile Western imaginations as none of them had ever been inside one (harem-haram = forbidden) but I still love 'em! I struggled a bit with this one as some of the drawing up was wrong and spent a good few hours correcting them! I was trying to get an Arabian Nights atmosphere to it as well with artists like Edmund Dulac being an influence.
