MOEDERLOOS

2020

Multi block linocut

Edition size: 1/20

Paper size 380x370mm

This piece was created for The Printing Girls group exhibition. It consists a multi-block linocut in bold contrasting red and black.

The print is taken from one of my hand drawn designs which are transferred and then carved into a sheet of Art Linoleum using specialist tools. The carved surface is then rolled with ink using a brayer (roller), printmaking paper is placed on top and it is hand pulled from a manual printing press.

Given the unique process of this form of printmaking, each print is slightly different which adds to its charm.

This piece aims to raise awareness of South Africa’s silent epidemic. Gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide continue to violently claim the lives of women in children on a daily basis. South Africa’s femicide rate is nearly 5 times higher than the global average of 2.6 per 100,000. This piece speaks of the desperation and sense of despondency felt by many womxn.
