Original artwork description:

Mandragora or Mandrake is a plant which has been used in magic and medicine over the centuries and has many mystical and fantastical stories attributed to it, making it legendary. It has been used in magical ointments by witches and sorcerers. It has been used in scientific medical practices too. It also has a formidable reputation of being an aphrodisiac. In truth, the plant is poisonous and can be fatal to people who ingest it. The root of the plant is shaped like a miniature version of the human body, which instilled the belief that this plant possesses magical properties. It was believed that when the plant is pulled out of the soil it screams, and those who hear the scream go mad. They are sent to hell after death. I used this myth to weave an erotic fantasy around this character who is both alluring and dangerous. I have always found the concept of fatal attractions very intriguing. The sense of adventure overcoming taboos, the power play, the seduction and the erotic possibilities of a chance encounter evoke the notorious and secretive, many times complicated, homosexual cruising rituals before the arrival of online dating. I have used a male body to project the popular concept of 'Femme Fatale'.
I have used watercolor wash on handmade paper first and then drew in the details with a pen using waterproof ink.
