Large sketchy painting influenced by one of the best portrait painters John Singer Sargent.
Influenced by his work and his brush work I have painted this image of the infamous Madame X (Madame Pierre Gautreau) sitting on a sofa as she waits for Sargent to arrive and being the portrait sitting.
Sargent found her to be an incredibly beautiful woman but described her as a very lazy sitter, he sketched her many times and found it very difficult to work with her as she was so reluctant to aid the artist in the sitting. I have shown this lazy attitude in the way she is slumped on the sofa which creates a beautiful black slither cutting through the colourful fabric of the sofa.
I thought it would be a great idea to paint her as she waits for the artist to arrive, I have painted her with a very small smile compared to the original painting but I have kept it incredibly muted, very much as I am sure she herself would have done.
