This is a large portrait of a marabou stork. The stork is bent over towards the viewer, leaving a large amount of empty space. The stork is confrontational and designed to make slightly uncomfortable viewing, mirroring the animals character, which is aggressive in the wild. I also decided to leave the painting unfinished, to emphasise the raw visceral feel the bird exudes.
I love painting birds, I was first drawn to marabou storks because quite a few of their characteristics seem to resemble humans, and their upright leggy stature resembles humans and that amused me. They are a fascinating bird, with strange plumage and colouring - and I enjoyed the subtle nod towards anthropomorphism.
