Artwork description:

I thought this was a scene suitable for Christmas. 700 years on, I notice musicians still pull the same faces today. The young Martin was a soldier who became a monk and preached in the countryside around Tours in the fourth century. So esteemed was he that the people of Tours insisted he become their bishop but in an attempt to avoid being made so, he hid in a barn. Martin's hideout was given away by geese in the barn, setting up a great racket because he was with them. Once discovered, Martin was hauled off to the church and made bishop, in the year 371. This print is adapted from an extract of a painting by Simone Martini (1284-1344) on the subject of Martin being knighted. Today St Martins is a charity in London, helping people with mental difficulties from distressed backgrounds. They provide homes and support and encourage people to take their place in society.
