This is a unique and expressive life size portrait of a Long-eared Owl from a series of paintings 'The Night Watch'. I used oil paint, mix media and taxidermy materials to create engaging and transfixing paintings of owls, capturing the enigmatic air of mystery which surrounds these nocturnal birds.
The eyes are made from glass, as used by taxidermists. They are fixed by cutting a hole in the canvas, which is sealed using varnish, and the eyes are carefully attached to a baton of wood behind the canvas. Reflective material behind the eyes mean an extra dimension of life is brought to the painting. Cut glass crystals are used for stars, so the night sky truly twinkles.
