This is an outdoor (“plein air”) work created in Zeeland, Netherlands, close to the Belgian border. This stretch of water, about twenty minutes by car from my studio, near the town of Oostburg is a site where I have often painted. It is a wonderfully natural place full of wild birds and I was attracted to the peacefulness of this particular scene with the “lazing” and “grazing” cows backlit against the summer landscape with bright sky overhead. These normally white cows with their short legs, longish ears and fat rumps are, for some reason, known as “Belgian Blues” and are a typical sight in the region.
“Lazing and Grazing” was painted on site using Windsor and Newton watercolour paint on 300g Arches rough watercolour paper. I have chosen summery yellow and green tones contrasting with the blues of the sky and the water and cool blues for the shadows in the foreground.
This painting is one of a series of Zeeland paintings. It is sold mounted and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
