Question for the artist?

Artist's description:

"Jornada del Muerto" (Journey of the dead) is a painting inspired by a trail near Socorro, New Mexico. This trail was discovered by the Spaniards in search of the Seven Cities of Cibola. The Jornada Del Muerto strenuous route used to take several days to a week to be crossed. During the 1680s Pueblo Revolt in New Mexico, 2000 Spanish settlers and Indians from the Isleta and Socorro pueblos were forced to flee southward along this trail. During this Journey only fewer than 1200 survived the trip.
