View of the Ivangorod Fortress from the town of Narva. November-December 2017. I started to paint a picture from nature.
The fortress was founded in 1492 on the banks of the Narova River by order of Ivan III. According to legend, the king argued with the leader of the Teutonic knights that he could build a fortress the size of a horse's skin.
According to Ivan's plan, the skin of a large white horse was cut into thin strips. On the territory that fit inside the horse skin ring, a fortress measuring 36 by 36 m was built in 3 months.
The fortress is protected from three sides by the river. On the left bank of the river you can see the Danish castle Hermann.
