I called this scene- I am the corner where I am

Giclée/Inkjet prints art photography on phlox fabric (print only for sale)

Art photography of mixed media sculpture, I decided I would build miniature room corners within safe and precious little cabinets. I wanted to show respect and appreciation for such recluse and tranquil places of our being. Show the importance of such spaces within the home for thought and silence.

I photographed the model at a different times of day to create an atmosphere with natural light. This was effective as the sun casts shapes of furniture in the form of shadows onto the walls. I always feel overwhelmed when I am taking these photographs as I feel I am bringing objects to life.

I decided to print on phlox for the feeling we had when we touched the wallpaper in the 1970/80. The design was in relief phlox. I felt this would lend itself to the photography within the home. My inspiration came from the book "Poetics of Space" by the French philosopher Gaston Bachelard. I had a miniature book made for the scene as a tribute to "Poetics of Space".

Gaston Bachelard... “ The corner is a sort of half box, part walls, part door. It serves as an illustration for dialectics of inside and out. “every corner in a house, every angle in a room, every inch of secluded space in which we hide, or withdraw into ourselves, is a symbol of solitude for the imagination: it is the germ of a room, or of house. Only the dreamer of corners will understand the full meaning of curling up in contemplation and the simple joys of declined repose. A corner that is “lived in” tends to reject the restrain, even hide, life. In one’s corner one does not talk to oneself. When we recall the hours we spent in our corners, we remember above all the silence, the silence of our thoughts."
