Original artwork description:

One of a series of drawings developed from sketches made in situ on the edges of green spaces in Kyoto and Tokyo during 2012-13. Homeless people were accommodated in blue plastic tarpaulin covered plywood dwellings; licensed temporarily by the city authorities. Their presence on the periphery of spaces of oriental beauty created a potent aesthetic tension between a timeless composition in space and contemporary deprivation.
The outline derives from the way kimono designs are conventionally presented; seen from the back with the gown opened to the sides.
