Artist's description:

great expectations

In 1909 the artist August Macke (1887-1914) painted his expectant wife, Elisabeth. The work was titled 'Portrait with apples' and is the inspiration for this print. Elisabeth had fond memories of sitting for Macke's portrait, recalling, “I felt so much part of the work itself, and then, sometimes, the little thing inside me would announce its presence with a gentle knocking — a blissful feeling for a young woman.” I presume the apples represent the fruit of the couple's love. As their life unfolded, the Macke's had two children and then August's life was tragically cut short in the madness of war.

This print is pulled from relief plates cut from rubber, a variation of letterpress, akin to linoprinting. The completed edition made 3 copies. The paper and ink are of high quality and should present no keeping difficulty. The print would fit straight into a 10x12 inch frame if desired or trimming the print to your requirement is included. Please see the adjacent photograph as to how the image is positioned on the paper.
