Gli Innamorati, or lovers, are stock characters in the Commedia del Arte. In this drawing they are placed in a symbolic world conceived as theatre, containing the signs of an imperial , hierarchical order that is the antithesis of the playful, satirical and musical life of the Commedia's Innamorati. The drawing is a study for a painting in oils.
