Depicted here are vines over on the "montagne de Beaune" during a hard frost in winter (great for the vines!). The frost touches the tips and tops of the vegetation with white but many of the colours underneath remain - which is what I I focused on and enhanced. A typical Burgundy or French wine region landscape.
This is an oil painting on canvas, using the glacis method of painting very thin, although increasingly thicker, layers of colour over each other. Sometimes it is a pure yellow underneath a pure blue to create the green. It provides a richness and depth to the colours but can be a time consuming way of painting with oils. The untrimmed shoots of the vines have been scraped into the paint.
The edges of the canvas are painted black to enable it to be hung without a frame. There are no hooks on the back of this canvas.
