Original artwork description:

Mourning for strange reasons involve, for many, coming together and having meals together even when one has no appetite. This painting was painted during a period of great mourning. Grief forces close introspection and demands time and patience.

The painting is in a square format but within the four edges, circles and ellipses rule the composition as if each figure seated around the round table is in turn going through the darkness of mourning. The dessert being served are sweet sesame dumplings in a sweet ginger soup. The contrast of the white sweetness of the dumpling in the pitch dark colored ginger liquid as well as the black core of the dumplings seems a very appropriate metaphor for mourning.

RIP.
