Beach huts are so evocative of life on the beach because you can store everything you need in there for a relaxing day in the dunes, just looking out at the sea and watching the seagulls circling overhead. I loved this group of huts that I discovered in Breskens, Zeeland in the Netherlands, particularly because there is an “odd one out”. Can you spot it? While the classic Dutch beach huts are white and have rooves that slope in one direction, here was one painted in pink and turquoise with a saddle roof with straw! It made me think of the Caribbean and I loved the contrast of the pastel colours against the sand and dune grasses. This painting was painted en plein air alla prima (or in on location, in one go, if you prefer;-) as most of my paintings are. My aim as an artist inspired by the great French impressionists, is to capture the spontaneous mood of the moment.

“Dune Life” was painted on location on 600g rough grain, mould made Hahnemühle watercolour paper using Windsor and Newton paints. With its maritime subject, this beach hut painting would be a good addition to an art collection in a coastal home. It comes in a warm white mount to fit a standard frame size of 50cm x 60cm and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
