Original artwork description:

One of my historical and very traditional with a capital T seascapes, depicting herring drifters heading out to the fishing grounds a century or more ago.

Herring were being caught in abundance at night by fleets of fishing boats known as ´drifters´in the North Sea. (from the top of Scotland and down the east coast of England). The catches were then usually smoked to become the famous kippers, a very popular traditional fish meal. These boats operated first under sail and then for a period from the late 19th century with the introduction of the steam engine these fishing boats became steam drifters and were powered by coal. With their tall funnels earning them the nickname ´woodbines´- a popular cigarette brand at the time.

Herring swim near to the surface at night and so the boats would head out to sea in the late afternoon to lay long lengths of nets and then drift with the tide after dark. Hauling in the nets once a shoal of herring had been caught.

This original oil painting is offered for sale framed in a traditional hand finished bespoke frame and is ready to hang. Notes for guidance on hanging and care of your painting are also supplied.

Please message if you would rather purchase unframed (it will reduce the price a little!).
